TENCEL

Currently extremely popular in fashion. The fiber has long-lasting benefits and is also lightweight, soft and very comfortable. No wonder CHPTR-S uses this for the AW20 season. We take you into depth:

Tencel is the brand name of the fiber lyocell. The fabric is made of wood, in most cases from Eucalyptus trees. The fabric is stiff when wet, but becomes soft, comfortable, strong and supple when it dries. Semi-synthetic materials like this one have a natural source, but need a process to convert it into a fiber that can be used for clothing. Other semi-synthetic fabrics such as lycocell are, for example, rayon (viscose) and modal, but Tencel is produced much more sustainably.

Benefits

Nearly 70 million trees are felled annually to make wood-based fibers. Of that, almost a third comes from endangered tree species. Tencel is made from the wood pulp of Eucalyptus trees, which have a much more sustainable life. Compared to cotton, for example, these trees require much less fertilizer and pesticide to grow. In addition, Eucalyptus trees use 80% less water than cotton. The trees do not need an irrigation system and water is recycled: a so-called 'closed loop system'. This system ensures that chemicals are collected and reused, instead of ending up in the environment. Tencel is produced chlorine-free, making it completely biodegradable. Wherever it ends up, nature can break it down itself.
